Pre-Retreat SCIENCE Immersion: A Vast and Joyous Realm Friday AM Charlotte Mason’s goals for school science were to instill a sense of wonder and awe in students and provide them with the common information that allows for scientific literacy. The former will enrich their lives, but the latter is a lofty goal. It means more than preparing a student for college entrance exams and possible university courses to follow. It also means guiding them to become citizens who can think, form opinions, discuss hot topics, and vote on the scientific issues of the day. We will spend some time in each form during this extended course, engaging in a Charlotte Mason science curriculum, using books, experiments, and nature to learn how Miss Mason’s philosophy is woven through the method.
Session 1: A Short Synopsis of CM's Philosophy (a.k.a. The 20 Principles) Friday PM In the preface of Charlotte Mason’s books on education, you will find a Short Synopsis” of her philosophy. When speaking of the first point therein, Charlotte Mason said, “‘Children are born persons,’ is the first article of the educational credo in question.” (6/29) A credo or creed is a statement of the beliefs or aims which guide someone’s actions. Many religious traditions have creeds — a statement of their religious beliefs. Knowing the goal or the big picture helps us understand how to live rightly and make the small decisions that carry us through life. Charlotte Mason’s short synopsis is our educational creed, one that clarifies our beliefs and aims and guides our actions.
Session 2: Growing as a Person and Home Manager Saturday AM This candid workshop is for the woman who has committed to educating her children, in addition to the task of feeding, clothing, and caring for all of her people, in addition to her devotion to her husband, when "too often when she has had no previous training of any kind for the marvelously varied duties she has to perform. All at once." ("Mother Culture," Parents Review, vol. 3, p. 93) Let's have a frank conversation about how to stay organized, manage the myriad responsibilities, and keep a joyful and patient disposition. Let's also recognize the importance of caring for our bodies, feeding our minds, and honoring our spirits as we continue to grow as a person loved by God.
Session 3: Charlotte Mason Through High School Saturday PM Charlotte Mason developed her educational method for all students, but many parents think they must abandon her method once their students reach high school. In this workshop, we will discuss why this is far from true. In particular, we will consider what high school will look like if you follow Miss Mason’s approach, what subjects are tackled, the rigor of the program of work, and how to deal with high school transcripts, college applications, and entrance exams. Will your child be prepared to succeed in a non-Charlotte Mason environment? Join Nicole to find out.
